Home & Garden: 3 things we want to accomplish with our garden this year

Picked fresh from our garden

I must be tired of winter?  Well, not really. The weather here in Chicago-land hasn’t been that bad. We’ve had our share of cold days,  but still….compared to what we’ve gotten in previous years….we’re doing good.

Any-who, every year when gardening season is over I always think of what I could have done better.   It always comes back to one thing. We’re not getting our worth out of our garden.  What good is it to labor all summer in the sweltering heat and come winter,  have nothing to store to carry us through the winter months or an abundance to share with those that don’t garden.

There are a couple things we want to focus and perfect with our garden.
1. Plant and grow what we’re going to actually use.

2. Learn how to store and preserve what we have grown.

3. Get the most out of it with recipes and preparing new dishes.

So, this week I will spend my spare time planning out what we’ll grow and researching more on canning.  A couple years ago we tried canning and it was a big fat fail!  This year we plan to do it right.  We have the books and supplies, now it’s time to put it to good use.  Also, the best part of growing your own garden is creating dishes and nutritious meals that your family loves.  That’s one of the rewards from the labor.

Do you garden during the summer months and if so, what areas of gardening would you like to perfect?

  2. Love the idea of doing preserving and canning as well as making recipes! This is going to be neat, so long as you share it ALL!
