How to save on your spouse’s work lunch

We all know how costly things are these days.  I couldn’t imagine having to budget in a take out lunch on a daily basis.   Since my husband has to leave home for work, works far away and works very long hours, I see to it that I send him off with a lunch and a simple breakfast.

He loves a robust sandwich, drink, morning coffee and breakfast.  I think someone is spoiled.   However, making sandwiches daily is costly.   I finally came up with the best way to get more bang for our buck.

Alternating leftovers with sandwiches.  So, one day I’ll make him a sandwich.

And the next I’ll send him off with leftovers from the day before. Like today he’s having lasagna for lunch.

We’re also really big on salads in my house.   Maybe once or twice a week I’ll add a loaded salad to his lunch menu.  Another reason taking sandwiches daily can be costly for us is because my son takes a lunch to school too.  He started off the year taking lunches, changed his mind and changed it back to wanting to take lunch again.  My son on the other hand can’t take leftovers if they need heating, but he’s also a lover of salads.

Now for breakfast
Coffee is a must! I enjoy my coffee from home over any popular coffee spot and so does my husband.  I always pick up seasonal creams for extra enjoyment and to add a special touch.

When school started back I was doing full breakfasts in the morning and soon that got old. Threw me totally off my workout schedule. Now, I’ll throw together a breakfast taco, soufflé or a quick breakfast sandwich to go.

Simply whip up some eggs, turkey meat or bacon, whatever extras you can find in the fridge and pop it in the oven. If doing this every morning takes to much out of you, prepare it at night and pop it in the oven in the morning. Make the lunches at night as well. Big time saver! Do you have to prepare lunches for your spouse? What has helped you stay within a reasonable budget?

  1. My husband works close enough to come home for lunch, but I’m always trying to find different lunches because he seems to get bored a bit easier than I do.
