Oh Christmas Tree….

I’ll make an ornament for thee

The weekend of Thanksgiving I put up our Christmas tree.  This year I didn’t put up all the decorations and I’m fine with that.  Evidently there’s some more boxes in the crawlspace or attic.  Guess I won’t know until I begin to do a search and rescue.  I hate going in the crawlspace and that’s why I send my husband but one of these days, one of these days, I’ll have things all together and won’t have to go on search missions.

I wanted to do so much more but my creative drive has driven to a place where it’s warm for the winter.  I’ve seen so many pretty ornaments and decorations that I’d like to make but I get caught up in Cyberworld.  I guess when I come back to earth, I’ll do something.  I’d like to share with you a couple things I created for my tree and show you what I did decorate this year.  Tell me what you think.

Fireplace with garland

This is the fireplace after I put on the garland.  When we moved here we didn’t have a fireplace.  I’m always visiting model homes to get ideas and inspiration as well as furniture stores.  Plunkett Furniture was a store that I would go to look in on my lunch break.  The had expensive furniture and really nice decor surrounding their show room.  They would have these beautiful faux fireplaces.  I told my husband about it and we built this fireplace from scrap wood from other projects.  My husband tiled our entry way with large ceramic tiles and the tiles leftover I used to tile the fireplace.  The faux burning wood I found outside on garbage day (shhhh don’t tell).  The garland was from my former job.  After the Christmas season was over they would sell their Christmas decorations.  I purchased 2 garlands & 3 huge wreaths that I put outside on the garage and I paid no more than $30.00.

Pay close attention to the Nutcrackers.  They’re in jeopardy!

Run Nutcracker Run!

The Nutcrackers have ran to safety

Santa better watch out too!

My daughter could sing this to Santa.

You better watch out!

You better not cry!

You better not shout I’m telling you why!

Santa Clause, you’re in————- my——— town!!!!!!!

This is usually out on my patio in the summer.  It’s for drinks and all that jazz when hosting parties.  But in winter I bring it in so it doesn’t rust.  The bottom has some large ornaments and at the top I have some decorated garland and candle holder in the middle.  The garland I brought from a garage sale a few summers ago.

Christmas Tree

Here’s our Christmas tree.  I have a confession…. We still haven’t turned on the lights. lol It’s a pre lit tree but connecting the lights to each tier annoys me, so……therefore we haven’t turned it on yet.  Maybe we can start a tradition and dont’ turn it on until Christmas Eve.  Yeah!  That’s it!  Muhahaha!

Now I’d like to share some of my favorite ornaments.  They have no touching story.  They weren’t passed down from generation to generation but I like them because I’ve collected them the past couple years & a few I’ve made.  Whenever I see a nice or expensive ornament I’ll try to mimic it for less or make something similar.

Here we go!

Paper Airplane

What? How did that get there?!

Birdhouse Ornament

This is one of my first ornaments I made.  Just a simple birdhouse from Wal-Mart.  I painted it and added some glitter.

Candy cane Holder Ornament

This is what I call a candy cane holder ornament (I made that up).  I saw one similar in a store in the mall.  Don’t remember their price for it but I made my own.

  • I took some sturdy paper
  • wrapped it in a form of a cone
  • glued it with my favorite hot glue gun and decorated it with some sequin trimmed I had
  • Used the same trim to add a handle so that it will hang from the tree.
  • I filled mine with peppermint this year but candy canes fit really will in them.

I also, made some large Christmas trees to match them but they are missing in action too.

Paper Ornament

This is a paper ornament I made with my Cricut machine.  I made over a dozen so it helps fill in my tree.

Feather Ornament

I made these feather ornaments a couple years back.  I also made a matching Wreath but it’s M.I.A. with the other Christmas decor.  I can’t remember if I saw one somewhere and mimicked it or what but I love them.

Here’s a closer view.

That’s all for now.  If you have some holiday pics up, let me know I’d love to see them.

My Trash is My Treasure

My Trash is my treasure!

Window Shutters reinvented into an Office Organizer & Salon Magazine Rack/Holder

Last summer we removed our window shutters from our front windows. My first thought was to toss them but I decided to keep them… Why? Who knows! I pull this kind of stunt all the time! Keep trash & never throw it away! However, sometimes my very own trash becomes my very own treasure. With some creative thinking & getting the project done….I enter a zone…..

(below) here is the shutter in its painted brown state. When we moved in our house everything was painted brown or just brown! It’s a 1971 house so, those were the days of brown cabinets, yellow, brown, pink or olive green toilet bowls & tubs! EYK!

Tools Needed

  • Window Shutter (make sure the width is wide enough for magazines you plan to use it for)
  • Cork board
  • Dry erase board
  • Gorilla Glue
  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Bamboo sticks
  • Paint Brush (Sponge)

Now, although I cleaned all the cobwebs off the shutter, I didn’t bother to scrape it. Sometimes I don’t feel like it & I wanted ever year of this shutters life to show through. I used a basic Acrylic Paint (2604 Barn Red) & was able to use 1 bottle for both shutters.

Not perfect but after the next layer all imperfections will be camouflaged.

Next, I used an Acrylic Folk Art paint (658 Metallic Antique Gold). Taking a paint brush and using light strokes in some areas & heavier strokes in others to give it inconsistency & to add a bit of character.

After the paint dried I used the Handy Dandy Gorilla Glue to glue the Cork-board Square on the top & glued the Dry erase board on the bottom.

Since the cork-board & dry erase board were different sizes, I needed to use something to cover up the inconsistencies. I search through all of my stuff…..Popsicle Sticks! Yep! and…some bamboo stick that I had in a large bamboo arrangement.

I used the hot glue gun & outlined the cork-board.
Painted them the same color as the shutter.

It gave the shutter a great Afrocentric look to compliment the rest of the house. Another good thing about adding the Bamboo, it served as a ledge to place my Dry Erase Markers.

And…..the bottom of the shutter that was left over is now my magazine holder!

Are you wondering what did I do with the other shutter? Well, here it is!

Instead of having my Salon Magazines in a basket, I’m able to display them & use less space. It’s done! Tell me what you think!

Technically it’s been a year.

This month is my Blog Anniversary.  WooHoo!  One year that i’ve been doing this blog thang and I’m enjoying it!  So, what I want to do is repost some of my first blog postings.  It’s cool to look back on some things I’ve wanted to do and haven’t done yet. lol  I also that it strang that last year this time I was thinking of doing the same thing…..Decluttering!  As you can see this has been an ongoing battle.  Also here’s a pic of the end results of our closet.  I painted red because we had some paint left over from another project.  I’m crazy about the red because it feels as though, I’m shopping in a boutique.  May not have cleared out half of my clothes but 1/4 is a great start.

Red Closet

OK! OK! Still a bit full but the clothes are hanging up again.

Our ongoing Declutter Saga. Original Post from August 30, 2009

We’re spending this weekend decluttering. OMG! We’ve accumilated so much crap! I think back to when we first moved in our house and we heard an echo. We don’t have a basement but, we have a crawlspace. My husband hides our crap in there.

This decluttering mission all started because I was cleaning the closet under the stairs. The closet started off being my craft room that I rarely use. Now, my reason for cleaning under the stairs? I want a dog. Saying it, is tripping me out. I have a 2yr old daughter, you would think that’s enough? No. I have this urge to get a dog. I’m a little stuck up, so, my dog has to have it’s own room. So under the stairs he will go. Yeh, he! Once I heard girl dogs have a period! That help me decide on the sex of the dog. So, he will have his own room under the stairs.

When i’m done decorating his room I’ll bring him home. I’ve always said, “I don’t want any pets. A fish is good enough!” Now Mrs. A Fish Is Good Enough, wants a dog. Go figure?

So when we’re done getting some order in this house we’ll bring our new addition home. Yeh!

NOTE:  We never got the dog.

Closet Mission Organization Procrastination

Happy Monday! Happy Motivational Monday! We’re in our first week in August and time continues to not wait for us. My motivation this week is to get my closet organized and completed. Over 2 months ago (cough cough) the rod in my closet fell down and I’ve been avoiding it’s mass destruction since.

This really is a good time because now I can decorate the entire bedroom. However, I have to start with this closet. Here is my plan:

1.Paint closet
2. Have husband install the closet organizer (this is the tricky part) LOL
3.Go through all the clothes that were in the closet and minimize it by half.(cough cough cough) You see I didn’t say shoes or purses.
4.Put everything back in closet.

5.Replace closet doors with new doors.

6. Lastly, I need a creative idea for my purses.  Many are in totes but there are quite a few that aren’t.  I’m open for any suggestions.

As you can see I have some work to do. Is there anything you have to get done this week or that you may have been putting off? Let’s get motivated and get it done.
