As parents of athletes we all know that contact sports can be aggressive and oftentimes dangerous, we never know the actual severity or seriousness until it knocks on our front door.
During my daughter’s Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament last week she was headbutted in the nose. I wasn’t at the game, but my husband was there and he said the impact was very hard and he thought her nose was going to bleed. The coach pulled her out the game and had her see their athletic trainer to make sure she was OK. Everything appeared to be fine and she felt fine. (Check here to see if your State has adopted the Concussion Laws.) He had her sit out until the 2nd quarter and put her back in and she was able to finish the game with no complications.
However, a couple hours after she made it home we noticed her spacing out and moving in slow motion. We continued to ask her was she OK and she said that she was. As a mom, one thing I wish I had of done was followed my first mind and took her to ER that night. But, I was thinking maybe she’s sleepy because it was getting late, she had been at the school all day and we had never experienced with this before. During the night I checked on her a couple times and everything was fine until she woke up the next morning and began to get ready for practice. I noticed her not able to hold a conversation with me and looking down. She spoke to her personal trainer and he checked her again that morning and stated she was testing positive for a concussion.
She was very emotional
Couldn’t hold a conversation
Looked down at the floor
So, I took her to E.R and they did some test and X-Rays. Thankfully everything came back OK except the positive concussion results. I began to do some research myself and would like to share some sites with you for your future reference as well as an app. Hope this is helpful to any of you that have children/grandchildren in sports.
Today is day 4 since the incident and she’s finally coming back to herself. She won’t be allowed to play basketball until she’s cleared from her Doctor.
