Baby it’s cold outside….. Winter is in 3 days and depending on your geographical location, I may get jealous. However, just a few helpful tips to prevent hair breakage due to wearing the wrong winter accessories. Also, depending on how you’re wearing your hair this Winter will determine what’s best for you. Head-Wear *Before putting on your hat. Wrap your hair with a silk scarf. Winter hair breakage can occur while wearing a hat. *If you’re concerned about messing up your hairstyle you might have to do a little extra work. Purchase a hat with a silk lining or if you’re creative you can possibly create one yourself. Trust me the extra time will save you a lot of pain later. Neck-Wear *Now, you’re wearing a heavier coat which usually is a different fabric than your fall coat. Not only is it a different fabric but it’s also making contact with your neck. These same precautions should be taken when wearing sweaters, turtleneck and shirts with collars. Your goal is to protect your hair along the nape as well as protect the hair that hangs on your shoulder. *First, pay attention to the fabrics you’re wearing around your neck and nape area this winter. The thicker the [...]

Winter doesn’t begin until December 21, however with the weather we’re experiencing in The Windy City, I say, “Winter has come!” Here are a few tips to help prepare your hair for the Winter months. 1. Keep your hair and scalp clean- Shampoo with a Clarifying Shampoo & follow up with a Moisturizing Shampoo. For African American (once a week) & Caucasian (everyday or every other day). 2. Hair Conditioning Treatments- Follow up with a Moisturizing Conditioner. Leave on hair for 20min. -Relaxed hair(plastic cap under dryer) - Color Treated (plastic cap under dryer w/Color Treated Conditioner) -Hot tip: if your hair is extremely dry, hot oil treatment would be beneficial 3. Ends Trimmed- If you don’t follow this step, steps 1 & 2 are in vain. Find a licensed professional that you can trust and allow him/her to trim your ends every 6 to 8 weeks. This is crucial! I preach this sermon on a weekly basis. If you follow the above steps, you are helping prevent hair damage that can occur during the winter months. Assuming there isn’t any pre-existing hair damage. Tell me, will your hair manage these winter months?
This is a repost from November. Being a hairstylist for nearly 20 yrs has given me a lot of insight into the haircare industry. I don’t my profession lightly and i’m not easily fooled by marketing fluff! Read the questions below along with the answers I’ve given & then watch the video clip. When you’re done I’d love to hear your thoughts. Hair Q & A I would like to take this time and thank all that submitted haircare questions. Feel free to submit a question at anytime & I will have the answers posted here on the following Saturday. 1.)Do you recommend keratin treatments, or do they damage your hair? I personally do not recommend Keratin Treatments! Most Keratin treatments have the chemical ingredient Formaldehyde. We know this ingredient used for the deceased, embalming fluid. This ingredient was also used in nail polish to preserve the product. Formaldehyde is also carcinogenic which means it can cause cancer. Now, we’ve been seeing a lot of Keratin products marketed as “Non-Formaldehyde”. Is this true? The research that I’ve done proved it not to be so. The other chemicals used were like Formaldehyde’s little cousin. So when Formaldehyde’s little cousin [...]

How can some people sleep at night after a salon visit? You know? When your hair is picture perfect & you wish this was the day you were getting your drivers license renewed. Being a Hairstylist…. I’ve heard this question… been asked this question… & asked it myself! How are you going to sleep tonight?!?!?!?! So happen today while finishing up a client, my mom asked her, “how are you going to sleep tonight?” My client who also happens to be my Aunt said, “I’m going to wrap it up. (then she thought about it) Wait let me look in the mirror!” LOL Usually, when someone asks “how are you going to sleep tonight?”….it means your hair looks GOOD! Here are a few tips for sleeping at night with gorgeous hair: 1. Wrap: This is done by wrapping hair in a circular formation around the head. Your head acts as a roller, which gives a slight bend to your hair. After wrapping tie hair up with silk scarf. 2.Pin Curl: Taking large sections, pin curl hair with finger & use a bobby pin to hold in place. This adds some texture & possible curl. Depending on current hair style. Also alleviates [...]

Why do I need my ends trimmed? Is a question I hear often from clients. In the beginning of my career I’d shy away from the question. I’d say, “we can do it next time.” The truth be told. There might not be a next time! Isn’t that a bit extreme? No! Not at all. What a difference a hair trim will make. When hair begins to split, It will continue to split like frayed fabric or even like a run in your pantyhose (isn’t that an ugly sight). The solution is: Trim off the hair that’s splitting up your hair shaft. This stops further splitting as well as giving your hair a healthy look. How often should you have your ends trimmed? Every 6 to 8 weeks or when your having a chemical service done. How often have you had your ends trimmed or hair cut and noticed any of the following: 1. Hair appears fuller & has more body 2. Appears Healthy 3. Manageable If, done at the proper time you may possibly notice all of the above after receiving a hair trim. Hope you find this helpful. The next time your stylist ask to trim your ends, you’ll [...]

One very important thing I will like to point out. To have a successful hair consultation… Be up front with your stylist. If you had a chemical service last year. Don’t tell your stylist that you’re a VIRGIN. Unless you cut ALL your hair off, last year. The reason why this is so important, is it will save you money, unwanted pain and suffering. During a consultation you should find out: Who:will be doing your hair service. During a consultation you’ll know if that’s the stylist for you. If a consultation isn’t thorough you can be sure that obtaining healthy hair won’t be either. What:services will be done. What retail product will you need to maintain your haircare. Where:will you purchase maintenance products. If color service, do you want high lites only at the top etc. When:how often will you visit your stylist. Weekly, biweekly or every month. Why:are you having this service or why not. How:will this be accomplished. If you’re receiving a relaxer, will it be a virgin relaxer or touch up.
This week we’ve been talking about preparing your hair for the Winter months. It is very important the you see a professional to analyze your hair and scalp. This is the only way you will get a true analysis of the health of your hair. Today we will discuss breifly about what your hair stylist will ask you and what you should know about your hair. Here are some questions. 1.Do you have any chemicals in your hair? If so, what type? Relaxer and or color? 2.When was the last time you had a chemical service? How often do you receive a chemical service? Who does your chemical service for you? 3.Are you experiencing any shedding, breakage or extreme hair loss? 4.If yes, How long have you been experiencing it. Has anything changed in your life prior to experiencing shedding, breakage or extreme hairloss? 5.These are some important questions to ask yourself. Also have these answers for your stylist, so that her/him will be able to analyze your hair efficiently. Nicolettemedesign NicoleNicole is a wife, mother of 3, CEO & hairstylist living in Suburban Illinois.
Since the weather is changing, I wanted to give you some tips to keep your hair healthy during the winter months. A great way to do this is by having a consultation with your hairstylist. Last week I went to have an oil change on my car. During this season we see commercials about winterizing your vehicle. Whenever I go, not only do I get an oil change but they will also give me recommendations on other services my car may need at that time. Now I’ll admit my mind was made up. I’m getting an oil change and that’s it! I’m sure you may feel that way going to the salon. Consulting with your stylist about your hair is like having a diagnostic test done on your vehicle. If your ends need trimmed, deep conditioning treatment and/or advice on some things you can and should be doing at home to maintain healthy hair. Do you need a hair diagnostic? If so call your stylist for an appointment. If you don’t have a personal stylist, ask a friend to refer you to [...]

Fall is here and Winter is approaching. Here are a few tips to prepare your hair for the Winter months. 1. Keep your hair and scalp clean- Shampoo with a Clarifing Shampoo & follow up with a Moisturizing Shampoo. For African American (once a week) & Caucasian (everyday or every other day) 2. Hair Conditioning Treatments- Follow up with a Moisturing Conditioner. Leave on for 20min. Relaxers(plastic cap under dryer), Color Treated (plastic cap under dryer w/Color Treated Conditioner). 3. Ends Trimmed- If you don’t follow this step, steps 1 & 2 are in vain. Find a licensed professional that you can trust and allow him/her to trim your ends every 6 to 8 weeks. This is crucial! If you follow the above steps you are helping to prevent hair damage that can happen during winter months.
