Are the Strong4Life Childhood Obesity Ads Shaming Obese Children?

I think it was a couple weeks ago I received an email from Bookie Boo over at Mamavation regarding Childhood Obesity Ads of obese children posted in the state of Georgia (see some over at Strong4Life.com.)  She was outraged at their marketing strategy and felt that shaming children was not the way to solve the issue.  As you all know my daughter overcame obesity through sports and we are currently fighting it with my son through sports as well.

When I saw the ad it didn’t outrage me as it did many other bloggers.  I felt since the parents allowed them to pose for the ads, it was their way of dealing with their obesity crisis.  So, I read the article and moved right along.  Until today, while going through my feeds on my iPad I ran across an article from Resourceful Mommy, Still Ashamed.  Her post’s featured picture of an obese girl drew me to read the article.  She was explaining how many bloggers took a stand against Strong 4 Life and asked them to remove all ads of obese children.  She went on to say how it led to many disrespectful comments to her blog. Which in turn she deleted because of the lack of respect and name calling.  I totally agree that the comments were unacceptable and we should all be able to agree to disagree.

However, there was one section in her post that took me back.  She mentioned how she would have loved to tell them how her kids never sipped pop, she doesn’t have cookies in her home and her children have perfect height/weight distribution, but instead she deleted the rude comments.  What took me back was the thought of how her statement would make a mom feel that is dealing with obese children?  Since the whole purpose of standing against Strong4Life is to not shame obese kids and their parents who are dealing with the issue.  My kids have never been perfect in height/weight distribution.  They have sipped on pop and we do allow cookies in our home on movie night.  However, my kids obesity came from them not having enough play and exercise which is our reason for keeping them involved in organized sports.

I did leave a comment and not sure if it would get published or deleted.  What I wanted to express is if, we’re going to stand against or build a campaign, no one should be shamed when the ultimate goal is to help someone.  My comment was respectful and if it is somehow deleted, it would have me to assume that maybe I should keep my opinons to myself.

Maybe Georgia isn’t dealing with the obesity in a politically correct way.  Do they get any acknowledgement for effort.  Also, what if coming against Strong4Life causes the parents of the children in the campaign  to become shamed when they thought they were fighting for their children as well as others?  Remember they thought it was OK to allow their children to take part in the campaign in the first place.

Lastly, for those of you that wish to leave a comment on this post feel free to do so.  We can agree to disagree.  I will not delete any comments not even the rude ones because what happens on the internet stays on the internet ;-)  (unless they are spam.)

My 11 Random Things

4.I have contradicting feelings about Reality TV.  I love the drama, but I hate to see them make fools of themselves.

6.I love to thrift shop.

7.I also like to rescue curbside treasures.  When we first moved in our house we furnished it with trash to treasures.  Just the other day I was about to attempt to rescue a leather ottoman but it was to heavy! (tear)

8.I’m a night owl.  I’m up sometimes until 3 in the morning.

10.I like some rap music (gangsta rap).  It strangely motivates me.

11.I’m my mom’s only child.  I have a brother on my father side.

Teresha’s Questions

1.If you could live in a cartoon, which one would it be and what character would you play? OMG!  I have no clue.  I guess it would be Dora the Explorer.  I’d want to be her Mama to keep her from going away on those dangerous adventures.  I know if I could be her Mama I would have to take my daughter with me because she’d love to be Dora.
2.What is your favorite cereal? I have two, Golden Grahams and Honey Bunches of Oats
3.If you could have a talent that you don’t currently possess, what would it be? That’s hard.  I don’t think I would want a talent that I don’t have, but I would like to perfect the ones I do have.
4.In high school were you a jock, a nerd, a drama kid, a band geek or something in between? OMG!……………………………Was there even a word to express my kind.  Other than my mother thinking I was on drugs (I’ve never tried drugs other than marijuana a couple times and I didn’t inhale) Rebellious!!!!That’s the word. Rebellious!
5.Have you ever met a celebrity? Who was it, where was it? Did you act cool or like a crazed fan? Nope.
6.Harry Potter or Twilight or neither? Neither
7.When was the last time that you were REALLY angry? Probably yesterday.  Or, maybe yelling at people putting things back from where they got them wouldn’t count.  Just know that it wasn’t long ago.
8.If you could travel back and forth in time like in the movie Midnight in Paris, what period of time would you visit? None!  I really don’t want to travel back in time.  That might make me angry.
9.Is your belly button an innie or an outie? Innie
10.Do you have any strange phobias? Not that I can think of.
11.If the doctor informed you that you had one month to live how would you spend that time? After I spend half of it crying.  With family.

What do President Obama & Facebook have in common?

As many of you know I never talk about politics on my blog.  With the combination of PMS, approaching 40, seeing Red Tails and Face Book turning into a political headquarters, I knew it was time to express my personal opinion.

Over the past week we’ve all seen our friends express their political opinions and that should be respected.  However, some of the things I’ve seen to tear down the character of our current President usually is a picture pointing out the dumbest thing! Like this picture here

Really? Because he doesn’t have his hand over his heart he’s not suitable to be a leader? If we took a survey of the people that stand proud with their hand over their chest while their heart is far from it, half of the nation should sit down!  Do we know what possible took place before this?  Could he have just came from a meeting or had something on his mind?  People are trying there best to find something wrong with him that they don’t see him as a human.

As I saw others post pictures like this

When I saw this picture filter through my feed I thought…..Those that hate President Obama for no apparent reason are haters. I recently saw an article on the Internet about how people get sad when they see their friends post happy pictures on Face Book.  Sounds strange, but I believe it’s true.  If they don’t get sad, they just won’t like you.  They think…who the hell does she think she is, Martha Stewart?!  Or your post may be too positive.  You never rant and you never post personal status about the struggles in your life.   Then they say, “She think she has it all together!  Yet, they torture themselves by making a point to visit your page daily to further drive themselves mad.  Utter foolishness. However, this is the mindset of those that don’t have a reason to dislike him. Of course there’s the obvious reasons to be against the President, he’s pro choice, he’s a Democrat and I’m sure you can add more to your list of dislikes and I respect those differences.  However, I believe he should be respected as the President of The United States.

Like this totally disrespectful Arizona Governor Jan Brewer all up in the President face

What’s wrong with this pic? The President being the man he is walks off. You know if this was a woman President………….There’s gonna be to hits….I’m gonna hit her and she’s gonna hit the floor!!!!!She would forget she ever wrote a book!

Lastly, we have Mr Newt that calls President Obama the Food Stamp President. What?!!!!  According to Bloomberg.com food stamp use has increased 46% since 2008, a month before President Obama took office.  Many Americans would starve today if it wasn’t for the supplement of the welfare system.   The loss of jobs have changed many of our lives drastically and if we’re going to be insensitive and think that those receiving food stamps are inferior!  Beware of the day that you find yourself standing in the WELFARE line!  Every day I drive my kids to school I’m reminded that it can be anyone of us.  The empty homes in our community remind me of that.

Help! Mama needs a PMS Emergency Kit

Lately, I’ve been noticing severe mood swings approaching “that time of the month”. I don’t want anyone to talk to me and I’d love for them to stay about 1,000,000 ft away and their sound volume so low that it reaches -0.

I know I’m getting older, I’ll be the big “40″ this year. So, I made a doctor appointment for this week and hopefully I can get some understanding of what’s taking place with my emotional state.

In the mean time I’m thinking of preparing a PMS Emergency Kit….break in state of emergency. Here are some of the things I would need in my kit to give me a sense of emotional stability.

PMS Emergency Kit
1. Restraint Order against every member in my household. At the first signs of PMS I can lock myself in my bedroom and have absolutely no contact with them until I’ve had some meds or feel better.
2. Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate!
3. Caramel Frappe (preferably a machine but I’ll take what I can get.

4. Ice cream and every topping that can be thought of.

5.Laptop, phone and my iPad (to watch my Netflix)

6. Netflix

7. Money. In case they fail to comply with number one, I’d get lost and go spend money.

This is what I came up with so far. What else do you think I should add to my list? Have you experienced any emotional changes in your menstrual cycle at any stage of your life and how did you deal with it?
