3 Things I’ve Learned From My Daughter Taking Swim Lessons

When my kids play sports, I tend to learn a lot about myself. The good, the bad and my inconsistencies. My youngest has been swimming now for a little over a year and the first thing I learned about myself when she began swimming…
1.An old dog doesn’t want to learn new tricks.

My sweet mother attempted to give me swim lessons at our local YMCA when I was a little girl. After the first day of lessons and a horrifying water going up my nostrils experience, I quit!Stick a fork in me because this shriveled up girl was DONE!I told my daughter about my life shaking experience and she’s convinced that I should either take swim lesson or she would teach me herself. We’re all familiar with the saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Well, this old dog doesn’t want to learn new tricks!I was done the day I took one leap out of that pool to exit and I’m still done today.

2.I have helicopter mom tendencies.

Really don’t think there’s any explaining with this one.If you’re not helicoptermomish…your kids are the one’s I see running around the grocery store without supervision 😉

3.Don’t beat myself up over what I didn’t do with my older kids.
It’s easy to get stuck in the regret of what I didn’t allow my older kids to learn. What’s done is done and what they were able to learn and participate in, was sufficient. Next.

A balanced life is a pipe dream

We all have dreams
Some big
some small
and some forget to dream at all

All poems aside, for the past 5 years I’ve dreamed of a balanced life. I attempt to plan, write a to do list and create routines all for the sake of a balanced life. However, day after day, month after month the balanced life that I yearn for… is like a see-saw with my 6 year old and myself.

There are days that I tell myself…
Follow your list line by line and you’ll accomplish everything your heart desires.

But today… I came to the realization that a balanced life is a pipe dream.  Do what you do, do it with excellence and to the best of your ability. Whatever doesn’t get done, get over it!

Nonetheless, not achieving a balanced life is not an excuse to live a life of mediocrity,  forgetting to dream, accomplish the goals and tasks we’ve set in place. The days we I don’t get to accomplish my tasks and dreams, I must follow through with them the next day and the day after that.

Even though a balanced life is a pipe dream.  Don’t forget to dream.
